We all know how historic Lake George is and its vital role in the Revolutionary War - many relics from that era still remain and are proudly displayed around the town. But it's always a shocker when you're just doing regular ground work - in this case replacing a gas line - and human bones appear.
National Grid crews were working outside of the Lobster Pot Restaurant on Mohican Street in Lake George on October 17th.
During their dig, a human skull was found. According to the Post Star, a team of archaeologists from the New York State Museum went to the scene to investigate. After about a week of more digging, the rest of the bones were found mostly in tact, even with the hands crossed.
Lake George Village Director of Zoning and Planning, Dan Barusch, told the Post Star there are many similarities between this find and the 2019 unearthing of remains on Courtland Street when the bodies of 44 Continental Army soldiers were discovered.
We feel there’s consistency with what we found at both sites. We’ll probably never be able to fully corroborate that it was part of the same burial, but it’s possible.
As for now, the museum archaeologists are continuing to study the bones and National Grid has put a hold on replacing the gas line until 2024.
