During a city council meeting yesterday, Tuesday the 26th, the Schenectady Police Department was given the go ahead to develop and launch the "First Responder' drone program. The city council approved a 6 year deal with BRINC Drones Inc, which is a company that uses drones and other technologies for the use of public safety.

Detective Sergeant Bradley Carlton said in an article on CBS6Albany.com -

“It's a drone as a ‘First Responder’ drone program, so what makes it different is that there are calls we can send a drone to instead of actually having to send an officer in a vehicle. We’re hoping it can help us respond to the needs of our community, reduce response time to calls, get a drone up in the air quicker, maybe even respond to a call without having to send an officer to that call,”

The drones can be used to check out a noise complain or maybe a non-serious crash. They can provide the police department with a real time view of the situation and will also be able to arrive on the scene quicker than officers can.

Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy said -

“For police departments to use them as a first responder, this is unique. There's just a few number of departments across the country that are doing it at this point,”
