UPDATED at 12:31pm - While we might not be getting the popular choice of Wegmans in the Capital Region, it does look like Kroger's might be headed our way. There have been a number of job postings in the last week for the grocery store and as far as I know, we don't currently have any here in the 518.
Keep in mind that this is pure speculation. Nothing, that I'm aware of has been confirmed but judging by the job postings, it does seem like a strong possibility. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Over a dozen jobs for Kroger have been posted online within the last week. This comes just days after ShopRite announced the closure of their five Capital Region locations ๐ซ

Late last week we found out that Shop Rite has made the decision to close all of it's Capital Region locations due to unprofitability. So, once we all got over the initial shock of that news we started to wonder what was going to replace those stores.
There are quite a few people that were hoping that Wegmans would be taking over the 5 locations. Or at least take over 1 of the locations. If you've ever been to a Wegmans then you know exactly why people here in the 518 are hoping for that move. I've never in my life gone into a grocery store and said "Wow, this place is pretty awesome" until I walked into Wegmans.
While they're hugely popular out in Western NY it doesn't seem that the chain is ready to come to Albany, at least not at the moment.
According to the spokesperson for Wegman's Tracy Van Auker
“We do not currently have any plans to enter the Albany market,”
The Times Union talked with Daniel Livingston, a principle in DJL Reseach
He suspects that Wegmans may someday take a hard look at the Capital Region, but the company tends to move slowly and deliberately, opening about one store a year and paying cash to do so. “They are very slow and methodical,” said Livingston.
Let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope that they change their minds and finally make their way to The Capital Region.
