Bacteria concerns forces Lake George Beach to close temporarily

Million Dollar Beach, a beloved summer destination on the shores of Lake George, has been temporarily closed by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water. This closure comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of visitors amid concerns over water quality after heavy storms came through the area.

The decision to close the beach was made after routine water quality testing conducted by the DEC indicated higher-than-acceptable levels of E. coli bacteria. Measures such as additional testing and water quality assessments are being undertaken to determine when it will be safe to reopen the beach to the public. Local authorities have advised visitors to adhere to the closure notices and avoid swimming or engaging in water activities at Million Dollar Beach until further notice. Signs have been posted at the beach to inform the public about the temporary closure and the reasons behind it.

DEC also announced the closure of multiple camping and day-use sites in the Lake George Narrow Island area due to storm damage in the area.

In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to explore other attractions and enjoy the many recreational opportunities that the Lake George region has to offer. By working together to protect and preserve our natural environment, we can ensure that Million Dollar Beach remains a safe and enjoyable destination for generations to come.
