Thanksgiving Snow in the Forecast

Watch out for snow as you travel over the hills and through the woods on Thanksgiving Day

If your plans for Thanksgiving include a trip over the hills and through the woods to head to family, be careful as wintry weather will be on the agenda.

According to CBS 6's Meteorologist Alyssa Caroprese, the snow will arrive overnight, with the first bands hitting the Catskills just after midnight and working its way towards the north and east where it will become more widespread by sunrise.  Areas along the Hudson Valley will see the snow mix with rain, limiting the snow accumulations.

As seen by the snowfall map, accumulations will be highest in the mountains, with the Catskills and Green Mountains picking up 4 to 8 inches of snow.  Amounts in Albany, Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls will be in the 1-2 inch range, with areas into the Adirondacks will reach 2-4 inches. The snow will be a wet, heavy variety as temperatures will sit in the 30's for much of the region.

UPDATE: A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Albany and Burlington for Warren, Saratoga, Fulton, Montgomery, Western Schenectady, Western Albany, Western Greene, Bennington and Eastern Rutland Counties.  A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for all areas not under the Warning.

Since this will be the first snow for those along the Hudson Valley, travel could be dangerous as drivers get used to the slick and slippery conditions that wintry weather brings.  It will be recommended that travelers leave early and take their time so that they arrive at their destinations safely.

The storm will depart late on Thanksgiving, and Friday could feature lake effect snows for parts of the Mohawk Valley and Western Adirondacks.
