We may finally have an answer

For about two months, residents of North Albany and Menands have complained about a strong and unpleasant odor filling the air, but the cause remained elusive. Thanks to an investigation by NewsChannel 13, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation may have tracked it down.

NewsChannel 13 first looked into the matter back in April, after what some described as the smell of 'sewage' or 'rotten eggs'. in the area of the 787/I-90 interchange. Since then, the DEC has been looking into potential sources of the smell. On Thursday, the DEC released a statement saying they believe they've tracked it down:

The Albany County Water Purification District North Plant in Menands isa likely source of unpleasant odors beyond the boundaries of the wastewater treatment plant in North Albany. DEC will continue to closely monitor the county’s actions to address the violations and mitigate odors.

The DEC will continue to investigate the matter and do what they can to help eliminate the smell.
